Members attend A.P.P.L.E. Leadership Institute

Members of the WSEPAC were invited to attend the Advancing Parent-Professional Leadership in Education (A.P.P.L.E.) on May 13-15, 2009. The training was held by The Federation for Children with Special Needs in conjunction with Mass Focus Academy, and supported by the Massachusetts Department of Education. The goal of the training was to learn how to improve relationships between parents of children receiving special education services and professionals in school districts.

Special Education Director Edward McCormack, WSEPAC Executive Board Members Vice President, Sue Saulnier, Secretary, Amy DiMatteo, General Board member Susan Sutherland, and member Oanh Thi Thu Bui, participated with 6 other School district teams from around the state. Activities and topics included diversity, reciprocal outreach, inclusion, communication methods, personal leadership styles, and the development of team plans for implementing a parent involvement activity “back home.”

The parent leadership development model utilized, coupled with effective training materials, provided the WSEPAC leadership with the tools necessary to create a more positive atmosphere for collaboration necessary to address the needs in our district. The team created a victory statement and developed a Team Action Plan that can be viewed here. For more information about the A.P.P.L.E. Institute visit the Federation's website.

We will be presenting the action plan in more depth at the September 2009, meeting and look forward to hearing your thoughts. If you have any questions, feel free to share them by Email and someone from the PAC will contact you.
